Spontaneous symmetry breaking or not
Year: 2016
Type: preprint
Abstract: Assuming a bare scalar potential with two degenerate minima at $\phi=\pm v$, the convex effective potential is explicitly calculated at one loop. The true vacuum of the dressed theory is at $\phi=0$ for finite spacetime volume, and spontaneous symmetry breaking occurs only in the limit of infinite volume, where the effective potential features a plateau.
