New and Emerging Technologies for Clinical Proteomics

Year: 2012
Type: article
Abstract: The successful analysis and characterization of clinical samples which consist of complex mixtures of proteins, often with a large degree of biological variability, requires the availability of efficient and reproducible protein detection and quantitative methods. Over the recent years, novel proteomic approaches have been invented and established for specific use in clinical applications. This Focus Issue addresses several technical improvements, emerging technologies and new directions that will, hopefully, lead to improved efficient protein identification and characterization, specifically for human biological samples. Many of these methods originate in fields that are only now having an impact on proteomics. The goal of this Focus Issue is to highlight recent progress in a number of these approaches and provide examples of how protein detection and quantification can be employed in the clinical arena.
