Abstract: Nowadays touchscreen systems such as IPod, IPad and cell phones have revolutionized the way of human-machine interaction; for this reason multi-touch devices have been developed, since they are considered to be the future of computing and communication mainly due to the ease and comfort that they offer us when we use them. \nHowever these multi-touch devices such as the Microsoft Surface are too expensive, therefore, methods are being developed to design and build prototypes more economical and accessible to the people. \nIn this project, a Multi-touch Table using infrared leds, we inform about the design and construction of a multi-touch system at lower cost, using one of the five investigated methodologies: the FTIR, as well as the creation of a multi-touch application to demonstrate the way of interaction with the user. \nThe prototype will be made out on a normal scale, it means, that it will have the actual size and dimensions according to the specifications of a commonly used table. Using materials that are easy to obtain and taking advantage of physical effects of light in materials, it is intended to build a multi-touch table more cheaply and with the same benefits as the today’s marketed systems. In addition using the MT4J we will create a simple but useful application called USFQ to show the direct interaction that can be achieved with the user. \nIt can be concluded that it is possible to build a multi-touch table at lower cost using not so advanced and simple materials. In addition, it is intended with this project to encourage future research on this type of technologies.
