Abstract: The background influences affecting the academic library needs of students from non-English speaking backgrounds (NESB) are central to this select bibliography. The focus is on students of Asian origin studying in Australia. The approach is person-centred, both from the point of view of the librarian and the student. The personal comments that accompany each entry result from the compiler's many years of experience in education in Asia. They address such key issues as cross-cultural communication, staff perceptions, changes in Government immigration and education policies, and differences in cultural influences and learning styles. The first part is a position paper that briefly discusses these issues, outlines the methods and criteria used in selecting entries for the bibliography, introduces key writers on the subject, and acknowledges the scope and limitations of the selection.Part two is the bibliography. This recognises some excellent material available in other disciplines and through these and other entries, raises awareness of a user-group with complex needs. Finally, it places the academic library firmly in the centre of these complexities.
