Abstract: The essay argues that there cannot be a universal theory of drama.Indigenous African drama, though it contains what might be the universal element of drama, which is mimesis, is home grown and different from European drama in some respects. There is need, therefore, to proceed with conceptualising and operationalising indigenous African drama. In doing so, however, care should be taken to distinguish drama from mere spectacle.
