Merits and Demerits of Peritoneal Drainage After Hepatic Resection

Year: 1991

Abstract: Records of 47 patients undergone relatively minor hepatectomy, including left lobectomy, were analyzed to assess the relation between peritoneal drainage and postoperative complications. Frequency of postoperative complication was 63% or 21% in drainage group (18 patients) or non-drainage group respectively, with a significant difference (p<0.01). Postoperative major complication had a frequency of 25% or 7% respectively. Duration of drainage was 7.1±7.6 days (mean±SD). In patients not received drainage or received it for less than 4 days, major complications occurred in 8% and the frequency of subphrenic abscess was as low as 3%. In light of these data, non-drainage appeared not to cause postoperative complications. It is concluded that peritoneal drainage after relatively minor hepatectomy would not be always necessary.
