Eating to Live, Living to Eat: Neurobiological Basis of Food Addiction

Year: 2014
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: This talk investigates eating disorders and the neurobiological pathways that can lead to developing the disorder. Eating disorders can be caused by genetic factors, as some people are more susceptible to addiction than others, but can also be triggered by environmental factors. In fact, being addicted to food can be just as debilitating and difficult to overcome as drug or alcohol addiction. Additionally, the presence of anxiety can lead to developing an eating disorder, such as binge eating disorder and compulsive overeating, anorexia nervosa, and bulimia nervosa. This anxiety can exacerbate ones body and self-consciousness. This talk reviews some possible treatments shown to be effective.
