Studies on Properties of Collagen Fibers

Year: 1967
Type: article
Abstract: In order to study the influence of weight of salted hide on the properties of collagen fibers, the changes in various properties of collagen fibers treated with Ca(OH)2 and NaOH solution for various length of time were determined. Under the alkali treatment, some properties of collagen fibers, i. e., amounts of collagen solubility by alkali solution, its digestibility by trypsin and amounts of Cr2O3 absorbed by hide substance from chromium perchlorate, all increased in accordance with the time of contact, but on the contrary, the contents of amide nitrogen decreased. This influences of alkali treatment were readily observed in the case of light weight skin.In general, for 4 days at first term of alkali treatment, collagen seemed to change its nature under the influence of OH ion of alkali reagent and there was no essencial difference between the weights of salted skin and hide. After the first term of 4 days, the digestability of collagen increased readily. The essential differences were seen between the classes of skins (12lbs. and 27lbs.) and hides (37lbs. and 58lbs.).
