Abstract: The relationship between fiber orientation and tensile mechanical properties of glass fiber polymer composites was studied for large area components having a wide and thin cross-section gate.Calculations based on flow analysis showed that the restricted type gate results in straight in-plane melt front.Consequently, fiber orientation development in the skin layer, due to the "fountain flow", is the main factor affecting the mechanical properties.Experimental results showed that flow direction properties decrease with increasing melt front velocity.Observations attributed this result to the variation of skin thickness with melt velocity.Furthermore, the skin thickness fraction in nylon and polyphenylene oxide-polystyrene copolymer glass composites showed a linear relationship with tensile modulus and strength.Comparison between the Halpin-Tsai Equation for unidirection tensile modulus of short-fiber composites showed good agreement with experimentally determined values.
