Abstract: Objective : Parkinson ’s d isease (PD ) is characterized by m otor and non -m otor sym ptom s inc lud ing cogn itive, autonom ic, s leep, and sensory d is turbances. Cognitive im pa irm ent m ay occur in up to 80% of PD patients, and dem entia in approxim ate ly 30% . The purpose of th is study is to eva luate the frequency of cogn itive im pa irm ent and the characteristics o f cogn itive defic its and to know the poss ib ility o f early detection of cogn itive defic its in outpatient c lin ics w ith the questionna ire for patients and careg ivers. M ethods: A tota l o f 129 consecutive patients w ith id iopath ic Parkinson ’s d isease were vis ited m ovem ent c lin ic from M arch 2006 to August 2006. E ighty-five patients perform ed cogn itive test and questionna ires. A ll patients had m otor sym ptom s w ith Hoehn and Yahr stage 0.5 to 3 (mean: 1.98±0.617), and evaluated with cognition by K-MMSE (Korean version of M ini-mental s tatus exam ination), 7-MS (7-m inutes screen test), and demographic features. Results: The frequency of cognitive im pa irm ent in PD patients was 44 .7% (38/85 ), am ong them th irty (78 .9% ) patients com pla ined m em ory d isturbance. The characteristics o f cogn itive test were retrieva l defect in m em ory, v isuospatia l dysfunction and categorica l word fluency. W ith questionna ire, the com pla int o f m em ory dec line and d ifficu lties in activ ity o f da ily liv ing (ADL) were im portant po in ts o f cogn itive defic it in PD patients. However questionna ire d id not showed s ign ificant corre lation between com pla in of m em ory dec line and cogn itive defic it, on ly regu lar check w ith cogn itive function test revea led the patient’s early cogn itive im pairm ent. Conc lus ions: The cogn itive im pairm ent was frequent in PD patients. The characteristics of cogn itive testing were retrieva l defect in m em ory function and fronta l executive dysfunction.
