Urban redevelopment of greenbelt-area villages: A case study of Seoul, Korea

Year: 1991
Type: article
Abstract: During the past twenty-five years, Korea's population growth has continued in spite of successful measures taken for population control. Moreover, paralleling the experience in many other developing countries, Korea has not escaped from an explosive population movement from rural to urban centers, especially after the Korean War. For example, while the total population of Korea was about 22 million with an urbanization rate of 18 percent in the late 1950s, the current population has reached more than 42 million with an urbanization rate exceeding approximately 70 percent. The intense concentration of urban population in cities of over 500,000 has also increased from 61 percent in 1960 to 77 percent in 1980. Korea's capital city, Seoul, grew from nearly 3 million in the 1960s to one of the world's largest metropolitan urban centers with more than 10 million people in 1988. The present population of Seoul is estimated to represent almost 24 percent of the nation's total population.
