Abstract: From two types of class V act mutants of Streptomyces coelicolor two monomeric precursors of actinorhodin have been isolated and their structures determined. One is the known antibiotic kalafungin and the other a new compound. Their relationship to actinorhodin biosynthesis is discussed.
