New aspects of immune responses against mycobacteria: immunopharmacology studies
Year: 1998
Type: article
Abstract: Host’s resistance against tuberculosis relies on classical \nMHC-dependent immunity and on CD1-restricted \nresponses against non-peptide antigens (e.g. \nmycolic acid) presented by cytokine-activated monocytes \n(CAM) to CD3+, CD4–/CD8– (i.e.,double-negative, \nDN) T cells. A number of antitubercular or anti-HIV \nagents do not impair the in vitro induction of CD1b \nmolecule by GM-CSF on normal monocytes, or the \nfunctional activity of DNT cells. However, azydothymidine \nreduces CAM number, whereas Rifampin \nincreases CD1b expression. These results point out \nthat immunopharmacological analysis of chemotherapeutic \nagents should include the CD1-dependent \nimmune system.
