Abstract: A new approach to the detection of forest areas suffering from timber exploitation in the Brazilian Amazon forest is presented and compared to the circular buffer zone method. The procedure is divided in two stages: the first stage is based on semiautomatic detection of log landings in the soil fraction image generated by linear spectral unmixing of Landsat ETM+ data. Subsequently, the previously detected log landings are used as seeds for a supervised region growing classification of the fraction images. In comparison to the buffer method, the region growth approach has superior performance.
