Abstract: Background : Cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes are major causes of mortality. Psychiatric illness exposes to an increased risk of mortality, mainly in link with cardiovascular pathologies. Metabolic syndrome is a risk factor of cardiovascular and endocrinological diseases, and is frequently comorbid with psychiatric illnesses. Explaining and taking care of the association between metabolic syndrome and mental illness remains difficult for the clinician. This work, based on a bibliographic search, aims to study the interactions between metabolic syndrome, psychiatric illnesses and psychotropic drugs so as to improve the understanding of this comorbidity and to better take care of these patients. Results : The clinical association between metabolic syndrome, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia seems statistically significant and can be observed independently from apharmaco-therapeutic treatment by psychotropic drugs. Metabolic abnormalities that constitute the metabolic syndrome are also more frequent in patients suffering from psychiatric illnesses compared to the general population. However, the analysis of the literature evidences that antidepressant, mood stabilizer, first-generation and especially second-generation antipsychotic drugs often trigger metabolic abnormalities such as overweight, glucose intolerance and dyslipidaemia. Conclusions : Knowing the metabolic profile of psychiatric illnesses and psychotropic drugs, as well as realizing a monitoring and a regular follow-up of these metabolic abnormalities could help clinicians in take care of these complex patients for prevention and therapy.
