Regional carbon dioxide emission performance and its reduction potential based on environmental production technology: the case of main industrial provinces in China
Year: 2011
Type: article
Abstract: Within a total factor production framework,we develop a single indicator and a composite indicator to evaluate regional carbon dioxide emission performance using environmental production technology and directional distance function. The empirical study on the main industrial provinces in China shows that it is possible to reduce carbon emission and increase GDP simultaneously by an annual average of 30%.Potential carbon intensity is much less than the actual intensity and the rankings for some provinces vary significantly when these two intensity indicators are respectively used.Technical progress has caused the efficient frontier to shift outward from one year to the next. Some policy implications are also proposed in this paper.
