Bishops in Late Antique Italy: Social Importance Vs. Political Power
Year: 2012
Type: article
Abstract: A popular view of late antique Italy based on the research framework created by Peter Brown asserts that Italian bishops played important political roles as early as the fifth century due to their social power. I analyse fifth- and sixth-century evidence to show that outside of Rome there was no such “rise to power” and that bishops gained social rather than political importance by carrying out their pastoral duties.
