Hva er effektiv behandling ved kroniske smertetilstander hos eldre? En litteraturgjennomgang

Abstract: Chronic pain conditions are common among elderly, and often have consequences for the person's physical and mental health. Studies have shown that psychological treatment is beneficial, yet few studies have sought to increase treatment efficacy. This review aims to highlight which treatment study participants have received and what specific effects treatment has had on pain, physical functioning, use of analgesics and depression. A systematic search for studies published after year 2000, including psychological treatment for people over 65 years with chronic pain, was conducted. The search yielded 17 studies. Treatments consisted of cognitive behavioral therapy, self-management therapy and self-regulating approaches. Many studies included treatment elements of a different treatment category, but most treatments were in line with the theories they were based on. Treatment elements were diverse. No clear connections between type of treatment and effect on depression, pain, physical functioning or use of analgesics emerged. Results indicate that different types of treatment may be equally effective, but more studies investigating the underlying processes of pain treatment are needed. Studies of greater methodological quality are needed for this age group.
