Abstract: Objective: To investigate the expressions of PTEN and matrix metalloproteinases 2 (MMP-2) in breast cancer and their relationship with the expression of ER, PR, and the clinicopathological features. Methods: The expressions of PTEN , MMP-2, ER, PR and c-erbB-2 were detected in 68 cases of invasive ductal carcinoma(not otherwise specified, NOS) of breast using the standard streptavidin peroxidase (SP) method. Results: The positive rates of PTEN and MMP-2 expression were 42.6% and 54.4% respectively, in 68 cases of breast cancer. The expression levels of PTEN were higher in well-differentiated (Ⅰ-Ⅱdegree)and earlier-stage (Ⅰ-Ⅱstage of TNM staging system) breast cancer (P0.01). The expression of PTEN was correlated positively with the expressions of ER and PR(P0.01), and was correlated negatively with the expression of c-erbB-2 (P0.01). The expression of MMP-2 was related positively to the expression of c-erbB-2 (P0.01). Conclusion:The loss expression of PTEN was correlated with poor differentiation and higher aggressiveness in breast cancer, and was accompanied by reduced the expressions of ER and PR, and increased expression of c-erbB-2. The MMP-2 protein plays an independent role among different histologic grades, different clinical stages and different status of steroid hormone receptors in breast cancer, but is likely to have synergistic effect with c-erbB-2 oncogene in the genesis and progression of breast cancer.
