[Stroke prevention: carotid stenting or carotid endarterectomy?].

Abstract: Carotid angioplasty and stenting (CAS) has been introduced as an alternative to carotid endarterectomy (CEA) for treatment of carotid atherosclerosis. This paper summarizes benefits and limitations of CAS and CEA, describes the main technical points of CAS procedure, use of protection devices and adjunctive pharmacotherapy to reduce procedure related incidents.
