Abstract: The puppy’s immunological gap is the period during which there is not enough maternally derived antibodies to protect it against infections, yet too many to respond properly to vaccination. During this gap, the puppies are very susceptible to infectious diseases. The infectious agents that can affect puppies are various: viruses, bacteria, more or less resistant in external media, with different modes of transmission. Prevention of infectious diseases starts with vaccination. Nowadays, the general recommendation is to adapt each vaccination protocol to the dog’s lifestyle. The vaccination of dogs is evolving towards longer intervals between boosters for core vaccines, while keeping annual boosters for non-core vaccines. For infectious agents against which vaccines are not available, we can protect the puppies thanks to strict hygiene measures. The period of increased susceptibility to infections is also a socialization period for puppies. Preventive measures have to be taken in breeding units, but also at home to avoid aggressive behavior later.
