Intermodal Transport Research: A Law and Logistics Literature Review with EU Focus
Year: 2014
Type: preprint
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: The purpose of this research is to explore the current state of research literature related to intermodal transport with focus on the European Union (EU). By intermodal (multimodal, co-modal) transport we mean freight transport using two or more modes of transport. For years, the EU has been working towards a model of “sustainable mobility” which involves an integrated approach to optimizing the efficiency of the transport system as well as to reduce energy consumption, congestion and other negative environmental impacts. The objective of the EU has been to develop a framework for optimal integration of different modes. The policy has implications both for cargo flows and for the legal framework. Therefore the aim of this systematic literature review is to reveal to what degree this development is reflected in the current legal and logistical research and if research connections between the two disciplines are recognized. Thus, the research approach is interdisciplinary, with both legal and logistical articles included in the analysis. Our results show that connections between the disciplines are limited, and that EU development in sustainable transport is more reflected in logistics research than in legal research.
