An Investigation into the Funds of Knowledge of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse U.S. Elementary Students' Households

Year: 2014
Type: article
Abstract: This dissertation presents a case study documenting the funds of knowledge of culturally and linguistically diverse elementary students and their families.Guided by sociocultural and Funds of Knowledge understandings which view diverse students and families as possessing broad and varied resources, I focused upon five students and their families.During the data collection phase, I observed participants across home, school, and some community settings and conducted interviews with students, their parents, and their teachers.Findings point to a number of resources possessed by both students and their families. With these findings, I hoped to provide both teachers and teacher educators with asset-based ways of knowing and understanding culturally and linguistically diverse students.I endeavored to address the dearth of research documenting students' language and literacy practices across various contexts, while I attempted to explore ways of integrating local resources and uses of oral and written language with classroom practice. Finally, I hoped for the findings of this study to challenge pervasive deficit narratives which frequently characterize non-mainstream students and their families.*cooking *language *social networking media *farming *car repair and maintenance *construction *clothing repair Cultural Practices (linguistic, literate, religious, and cultural traditions and events) *speaking Spanish *attending Spanish-language Catholic mass and Sunday school *religious and cultural holidays *birthday parties *traditional foods (Note: Adapted from Tenery, 2005) Everyday
