Neither Conflict, nor Comfort. The Co-habitation of Chinese and Belgian Aid in the D.R.Congo
Year: 2012
Type: report
Abstract: Whereas China’s economic presence in Africa has been the subject of much research and debate, studies on China’s Aid often take a helicopter view, examining the aid policies, principles and strategies. Not too much is known, however, about the reality of China’s Aid projects on the ground: how they are implemented, and how they relate to projects of other donors. For this reason, HIVA, together with the IASZNU institute in China and CDS of the University of Kinshasa in the DRC, have carried out 15 case studies, comparing Chinese and Belgian Aid projects in the DRC, in terms of their approach, quality, and embeddedness in Congolese society. The study also examines the extent to which the projects of traditional donors and China are converging or rather working against each other.
