Evaluating Multi-Modal Brain-Computer Interfaces for Controlling Arm Movements Using a Simulator of Human Reaching

Year: 2014
Type: article
Abstract: Brain--Computer Interfaces (BCIs) provide a potential means for individuals with tetraplegia to command arm prostheses such as Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) systems and regain the ability to make functional movements of their arms. Our work thus presents a closed--loop BCI simulator that models error corrections.Among other uses, this kind of simulator can be used to evaluate methods to incorporate goal--tuned neurons into the decoder. We anticipate that this kind of tool will be important for development of future BCIs.
