Forced Sex & Leaving Intimate Relationships: Results of the Chicago Women's Health Risk Study
Year: 2007
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Only a handful of studies have examined sexual assaults women experience when they try to leave or have left intimate relationships. Further, most of the social scientific work done so far on this topic focused on the plight of rural heterosexual women and involved the gathering of qualitative exploratory data. This paper helps fill a research gap by presenting some of the quantitative results of the Chicago Women’s Health Risk Study (CWHRS). Data reported here are derived from interviews with 705 women sampled as they came into hospitals and clinics in Chicago neighborhoods. In addition to focusing on the experiences of women who have not received much attention from the social scientific community, this study provides rich information on the temporal relationship between forced sex incidents and leaving intimate relationships.
