Abstract: The article examines the presentation of the protagonist as alienated radical activist in the novels Отцы и дети (Fathers and Sons) and Трудное время (Hard Times). Both Turgenev and Sleptsov draw on ideological and social questions of the day, yet each also creates a protagonist situated within a literary context. The Romantic hero, particularly as defined by Byron, is the major paradigm for Turgenev, while Sleptsov adopts a more skeptical approach. At the same time both protagonists are also imbued with the 19th-century Russia interpretation of Hamlet as a study in social frustration.
