Abstract: The first sentence of Appendix B should have read "The aim of this Appendix is to prove that a Hamming matrix has a nondegenerate eigenvalue other than its smallest eigenvalue if and only if the alphabet of the sequences has binary terms (i.e., l = 2 for some l); in particular, this binary condition is necessary for any positive eigenvalue of the matrix to be nondegenerate." Analogously, the third-to-last sentence of Sec. III should read "With this analysis we are able to show that it is necessary for the sequence to have binary terms (i.e., l = 2 for some l) for the leading eigenvalue in pattern-forming instabilities to be nondegenerate." This error has no bearing on any other results in the paper.
