Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in First Remission (CR1): A Single-Institution Retrospective Cohort Study Demonstrating Excellent Event-Free (EFS) and Overall Survival (OS)

Year: 2016
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Most children with newly-diagnosed ALL are cured with chemotherapy alone; however, a subset of patients with very high-risk disease features are referred for HSCT in CR1. An evidence-based review by the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ASBMT) recommends allogeneic HSCT in CR1 for children with primary induction failure and to consider HSCT for children with low hypodiploidy (<44 chromosomes) or persistent minimal residual disease (MRD), though limited data exist to support demonstrable benefit to HSCT in this population.
