A research cruise to investigate the Mozambique Current : news & views
Year: 2001
Type: article
Abstract: The greater Agulhas Current system dominates the flow regime and the ecology of
the South West Indian Ocean. Furthermore,
it has an important effect on climate
variability over the adjacent land masses and
thus on the rainfall over the southern African
subcontinent. Considering the importance of
this current system locally, as well as globally,
it comes as a surprise to learn how little is
known about certain of its components. This
is particularly true of the sources of the
Agulhas Current, that have remained contentious
largely because of a dearth of appropriate
hydrographical data. We report here on a
major research cruise undertaken in March
and April 2000 as part of the Dutch MARE /
ACSEX expedition to investigate the Mozambique
Current as a possible tributary of the
Agulhas Current proper.
