Carbonation reaction of lime hydrate and hydraulic binders at 20°C

Year: 2006
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Carbonation reaction of lime binders such as lime hydrate, hydraulic lime and lime with pozzolana has been studied at 20ºC with an experimental set-up in which the uptake of CO2 by lime can be measured as a function of decrease in the CO2 concentration with time. Change in the relative humidity during the carbonation reaction has been continuously followed as well. Contrary to the previous studies, factor analysis on the experimental data has shown the dependence of the reaction rate on the CO2 concentration within the ranges tested. No relationship was found between the specific surface area of the lime hydrate and reaction rate. Thermal analyses showed that not full but high degree of carbonation was achieved for the lime hydrate. Apart from the calcium hydroxide available in the lime-pozzolana binders, hydrated phases were also carbonated. During the carbonation reaction an increase in the relative humidity up to 95% has been recorded and it decreases after the reaction has been finished. Scanning electron microscope investigations indicated rhombohedral calcite crystals formed during the accelerated carbonation and micritic calcite crystals formed during natural carbonation in exposed air.
