YECREA young scholars' special session: Dealing with online risks

Year: 2015
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: This study builds on insights from EU Kids Online, with focus on the Belgian context and a particular attention for those chidlren who are more vulnerable, i.e. report more unpleasant experiences online, have more intense negative feelings about what happened, and struggle in adopting adequate preventive measures or coping strategies to deal with the situation. The topic of coping is central in this study, intending to deliver a contribution to the theoretical conceptualization and categorization of online coping and preventive measures, i.e. identifying (preventive) coping patterns and developing coping typologies. Our goal is to enrich these coping typologies and apply these to a broader range of online risks. We adopt a child-centered approach, using well-considered selection of (innovative) qualitative and quantitative research techniques and particular attention will be given to the interconnection of individual and contextual elements. This allows us to verify and clarify assumptions about the role of children’s personal and contextual characteristics. In short, the aim of my PhD-project is to understand how children deal with online risks and to identify which children are more vulnerable (or less resilient) online. We want to find out how exactly children’s individual and contextual factors have an impact on how they deal with online risks, and what are the indicators and mediators for online resilience. Our goal is to learn how we can support vulnerable children and increase their emotional well-being and coping capacities.
