Abstract: The overall aim of this thesis was to study risk factors and treatment options in gastrointestinal infections, especially in typhoidal Salmonella isolates. \\n \\nPrimary research questions: \\n1. To study risk factors of gastrointestinal infections and antimicrobial resistance \\n2. What are the most important mechanisms involved in antimicrobial resistance in typhoidal Salmonella isolates? \\n3. Can a new rapid diagnostic methodology be developed to identify antimicrobial resistance in typhoidal Salmonella isolates?
