Abstract: Key to TablesThis thesis will review the current literature on different screening methods for abnormal glucose tolerance, around preventing the progression of and delaying the onset of complications of diabetes after people have been identified with abnormal glucose tolerance or early diabetes. SummaryThis thesis will develop and evaluate a simple and effective stepwise strategy for the detection of diabetes.A strategy will be described detailing the optimal method of screening an at risk multi-ethnic population for diabetes in the United Kingdom.This will contribute to the current debate in the Department of Health and within the National Screening Committee on the need for a national policy for screening for type 2 diabetes mellitus.
