Rational Design of Freestanding Photoelectric Nanodevices as Highly Efficient Photocatalysts
Year: 2010
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: Inorganic nanostructures have been widely studied for solar energy harvesting and conversion. However, current research mostly focuses on photovoltaic devices which require to channel out the photogenerated electrons and holes to external circuit. The difficulty in addressing each individual nanostructure has prevented the realization of the full potential of inorganic nanostructures for efficient solar energy harvesting. Here we discuss our recent efforts in rational design and synthesis of photoelectric nanodevices that can make use of the photogenerated electrons and holes onsite for phototcatalytic reactions. We will discuss the heterointegration of semiconductor diode with metallic catalysts in a single nanostructure to form the standalone functional photoelectric nanodevice. The potential of such photoelectric nanodevices for photocatalytic reactions, such as degradation of organic pollutant, reduction of carbon dioxide and hydrogen generation will be discussed.
