Irish Theatre in Britain

Year: 2016
Type: book
Abstract: Located within easy reach of one of the world’s major theatre cities, Dublin has long felt the centripetal pull of London, and as a result there has hardly been a major Irish playwright, actor, or director who has not at some point been involved in a London production. This is of course part of the much larger migratory traffic between the two islands; however, where actors or directors may travel to Britain for a particular production, for Irish communities in the UK the theatrical exploration (and assertion) of a distinctive ethnic identity can be about more than developing a career: it can be about establishing the cultural credentials of a community whose relationship with the host country has not always been comfortable. This is most evident in recent plays by diasporic Irish playwrights in Birmingham and Liverpool.
