Year: 2013
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Background: Although intimate partner violence is a recognized cause of death and injury, its nature as a public health problem remains insufficiently studied. The aim of this study is to measure the quality of life related to health of female victims of intimate partner and to compare it with that of the general population adjusted by age and gender. Methods: We conducted a cross sectional study in a sample of intimate partner violence victims, cared by base social services in the Basque Country. Intimate partner violence was described as any behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, psychological or sexual abuse of women. The instrument applied was the health survey SF-36 to measure health-related quality of life and the general population adjusted for age and sex was used as a comparison group. Results: The health related quality of life of these women was significantly worse (p <0.001) than the Basque general population in all dimensions. The scores on the physical and mental summary dimensions were 46.26 and 30.06 respectively, while those in the general population were 51.48 and 48.96. Conclusions: Mental dimensions are those most affected. Health professionals must give priority to the development of mental health care plans to reduce the psychological and social aspects of intimate partner.
