Whole-cell models: combining genomics and dynamical modeling
Year: 2016
Type: other
Abstract: Comprehensive whole-cell computational models of individual cells are needed to understand biology, design microbial genomes, and personalize medicine. Recently, we developed the first computational model of the reduced bacterium Mycoplasma genitalium which accounts for every annotated gene product and predicts the dynamics of every molecular species over the entire cell cycle. Despite this progress, more comprehensive and more accurate models are needed to drive scientific discovery, microbial genome design, and precision medicine. We will discuss our efforts to create more comprehensive and more accurate whole-cell models by combining systems biology dynamical modeling with genomics and bioinformatics. This includes developing a data-driven, rule-based language to describe whole-cell models and a casually-correct, scalable algorithm to simulate multi-algorithmic whole-cell models.
