Abstract: As wireless communications continue to grow in importance by providing exciting new services beyond the conventional voice and text-only communications, antenna systems must evolve in order to keep up with ever increasing requirements and technical challenges. One prominent example is the demand for high data rates in mobile communications, due to data intensive applications such as interactive gaming and video streaming. Apart from the challenge of implementing multiple antennas in physically small terminals to support multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-enabled data rate enhancement, suitable measures are also needed to ensure that the antenna performance does not degrade due to proximity of the user and variability in the channel conditions. Moreover, the rapid adoption of machine-to-machine (M2M) communications and internet-of-things (IoT) concept also provides ample opportunities for innovations in antenna systems, including the use of smart antennas in RFID technology to enable smart wireless sensor nodes for tyre pressure monitoring.
