Abstract: In this article we seek to understand how the issue of race and miscegenation were present in IHGB debates in the nineteenth century. From the analysis of the articles published in the magazine Institute, we can see that the issue of race was something very sensitive within the IHGB, once blacks, indians and mestizos, who formed a large part of the Brazilian population, were objects of a number of negatives characteristics conferred for the science. However, these same readings showed that the mestizos also were objects of positive visions within the IHGB because in them the successes of European civilization in Brazil Tropical were deposited.
