Biotoxicity of mangroves on fingerlings of Liza macrolepis (Smith)

Year: 1997
Type: article
Abstract: Seeds, flowers, leaves, stem and root bark of seven species of mangroves \nnamely Acanthus i licifoflus, Acrost ichum aureum, Avicennia offic inalis, \nBruguiera cylindrica, Clerodendrum inerme, Excoecario agallocha and \nRhizophora mucronata were extracted with hot ethanol and water to \nstudy the effects on fingeriings of Liza macrolepis . The dwarf variety of \nA. off ic inaiis was also collected from Tuticorin for testing its biotoxicity. \nThe ethanol and aqueous extractSs did not show any difference in their \ntoxic action as far as lethality is considered. The total free sugar, protein \nand cholesterol of muscle tissue of the tested fishes indicated that in all \ncases of lethality by different extracts, there is considerable reduction. \nThe paper chromatography of various ethanolic extracts showed that \nmost of the extracts were containing 4 to 7 different chemical components.
