Abstract: THE family Raiidre belongs to the division Batoi!fei ofl the sub-order Hypotremata, and is represented by the principal genera ~aia, Psammobatis, and Sympterygia (Regan, 1906).The genus R4ia (an altered spelling of Raja) was institutea by Linnreus, after Artedi, for the type Raja batis in the Systema Naturre, Ed.X, Vol.I, 1758.The species are numerous and mostly of northern distribution.They ar~not very well defined, and the synonymy of many of them is distinctl~doubtful, and ,in some cases quite erroneous, e.g.
