Abstract: This essay, however, charts a course to some neglected aspects of the social history of the American sailing navy and urges social historians to cruise in less frequented seas. These aspects include: women; hygiene; patronage of officers toward warrant and petty officers and ratings; and the life-course of warrant and petty officers.
