Abstract: Policies promoting open access publishing have resulted in a startling increase in the number of gold open-access publishing groups, some of which have been identified as “predatory” in nature. This commentary aims toward a better understanding of the characteristics of predatory publishing groups, discusses the negative aspects of accepting spam e-mail invitations to publish in their journals, and encourages thought about an alternative direction for biomedical publishing.
