Abstract: It is evident that tobacco use can lead \nto nicotine dependence and serious \nhealth problems. It is equally evident \nthat cessation can significantly reduce \nthe risk of suffering from smoking related \ndiseases. Total cessation is the \nonly intervention with the potential to \nreduce tobacco-related mortality in \nthe short- and medium-term, whilst a \nreduction in consumption has a limited \neffect. \nSome smokers quit without using \nevidence-based cessation treatments. \nHowever, there are treatments that have \nbeen proven to be effective for smokers \nwho want help to quit. Simple advice from a physician has \nbeen shown to increase abstinence \nrates significantly compared to no \nadvice.
