Importance of Site Preparation in Reducing the Risk of Bacterial Contamination during Bone Marrow Harvest
Year: 2017
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Bacterial contamination of bone marrow harvest products is frequent with skin flora. During the years of 1998-2014, 93 marrow harvests were performed at the Medical College of Wisconsin Adult BMT program. 27 (29%) of the harvest products had positive bacterial cultures. This was not provider specific and the organisms did not differ from those in products collected through NMDP with most representing likely skin contaminants (Figure 1). Decontamination protocols at our site used ChloraPrep alone over the surgical site at the time of harvest.
