Abstract: Research shows that mindfulness has positive implications for coping with stress, quality of life and mental health. The Five Factor Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) is a recently developed instrument that measures mindfulness as a multifaceted dispositional characteristic. The overall objective of this study was to examine psychometric properties of the FFMQ with particular emphasis on factor structure and correlations with the Big Five personality traits. Two main hypotheses were tested. The first hypothesis was that we would find the same factor structure for mindfulness as the developers of the FFMQ. The second hypothesis was that we would find a correlation between the degree of mindfulness and personality traits in the direction predicted. First year psychology students were assessed on their degree of mindfulness by the FFMQ and Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS). Personality traits were measured by the NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI). We found a moderate correlation between the mindfulness instruments (r =-.61, p <.001) and factor analysis indicated a replication of the FFMQ factor structure. We conclude that mindfulness is best conceptualized as a multifaceted construct. The assessment of the relationship between total score on the FFMQ and the NEO-FFI factors showed a moderate negative correlation between mindfulness and neuroticism (r =-.61, p <.001), moderate positive correlations between mindfulness and respectively openness (r =.36, p <.001) and conscientiousness (r =. 37, p <.001), weak correlation with extraversion (r =.17, p <.005), and no correlation with agreeableness. The implications of these findings are discussed.
