Abstract: In article number 1602862, Shawn A. Putnam and co-workers, revisiting a 170 year old magneto-optical phenomenon, reveal a fast, sensitive, and versatile medical test. Polarized light interacts with functionalized magnetic nanoparticles in the biomolecule characterization method called fd-FRS (frequency-domain Faraday Rotation Spectroscopy). Alternating magnetic fields induce particle rotation and realignment with the magnetic field – a process dependent on the size, conformation, and density of the conjugated biomolecules.
