Abstract: Price: 37 s 6 d US S 4.80.Research on different features o f the neonate has made tremendous progress in recent years.Nevertheless, knowledge of the central nervous function at this time is still scarce. The author made a great attempt to study the neurological phenomena of infants in the first nine days of life.In nine chapters he tries to give an answer for the standardization an examiner should introduce in order to get reliable information from a neurological examination. Then the course o f neurological signs during the first days o f life is mentioned and thirdly the obstetrical and postnatal conditions, which affect the course o f develop ment and the consistency o f neurological signs throughout the neonatal period.Begin ning with standard selecting procedures and the normal development, the second chapter explains the sample. The following chapters deal with the postnatal care and general con dition o f the infant, the neurological examination, the state o f the infant, the neurological items and the interrelationship o f neurological signs in babies. All these chapters are com pleted by a large number of tables, while the photographic material is rather poor.A last chapter is devoted to the syndromes, o f which three are described: the apathy, hypcrcxcitability and hemisyndrome and their prognostic values. An extension o f this very important chapter would have been o f great value. On the whole, the booklet gives the attentive reader, who also has time to study the numerous tables, a fairly good impression of the role the nervous system plays in post natal adaptation to extra-uterine life.Detailed studies of these phenomena are presented by Beintema and, therefore, this booklet will surely find many interested readers.
