Abstract: Over the past 30 years, childhood obesity has increased significantly in the United States, with a prevalence three times as high as it was in the 1970s. How do we explain this rise? What are the implications for American society? What changes can we make to reverse the epidemic? This literature review seeks to answer these questions— to explore the multifaceted nature of childhood obesity through the lens of public health. Issues discussed include designation, trends, history, risk factors, health effects and implications, and prevention strategies for combatting childhood obesity within the United States. Ultimately, this analysis synthesizes this information together to create a fuller understanding of the epidemic within both the public and academic communities.
